When Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

Forceps holding a wisdom tooth

Would you be surprised to learn that not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth taken out? Some teens and young adults are actually able to skip the extraction process and keep their “third molars”! So what makes an endodontist recommend this type of treatment? Keep reading to learn when wisdom teeth absolutely have to be removed.

When They’re Causing Pain

Severe pain is a good indicator that your third molars can’t stay as permanent residents in your smile. For one thing, wisdom tooth pain can become debilitating, preventing you from eating or speaking easily or even thinking clearly. For another thing, dental discomfort is usually your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong.

If They’re Trapped Below the Gumline

One of the things that can be “wrong” with wisdom teeth is called “impaction” – which is a fancy way of saying they can become trapped below the gumline. Interestingly, this is more likely to happen with third molars because not many people have enough room in their mouth to accommodate them. With nowhere else to go, impacted wisdom teeth will start growing in sideways and struggle to fully erupt.

Impacted teeth are often painful, and can also leave empty pockets in the gums that form into cysts or damage nearby nerves and bone. More often than not, extraction is the best way to preserve the patient’s oral health.

In Cases Where Dental Damage is Probable

If a wisdom tooth makes a push towards the surface of your smile, there’s a decent chance it will shove other teeth out of the way in order to do so. As you might imagine, one tough object colliding with another, equally tough object can cause some damage! Your nearby pearly whites might chip and crack, or they might become “overcrowded” – an orthodontic condition where teeth are packed too closely together.

In a case like this, removing the wisdom tooth can help the patient avoid needing corrective treatments later.

Talk to Your Endodontist

Since wisdom teeth aren’t always visible, it can be difficult to know whether they need to be extracted or not. That’s where your endodontist comes in! They’ll monitor the growth of your third molars, and will be able to tell if they pose a threat to your oral health. Stay in touch with them, and they’ll make sure your smile is well taken care of.
